Living in the Interior of British Columbia comes with some incredible advantages: space, forests, acreages, mountain views and room to enjoy the outdoors.

Unfortunately, it also means living with wildfire.

For property owners throughout Vernon, the Okanagan and Interior BC, one of the most practical things you can do is manage the vegetation around your home, shop, barn and property before fire season arrives.

That means keeping grass under control, removing dead vegetation, reducing dense brush, pruning trees and preventing a continuous path of combustible material from running directly toward your buildings.

FireSmart BC recommends keeping grass short, removing dead leaves, branches and dry grass, eliminating combustible shrubs beneath trees and pruning lower tree limbs to help prevent surface fires from climbing into the canopy. FireSmart specifically recommends keeping grass below approximately 10 cm and pruning lower branches to roughly 2 metres above the ground.

The good news?

If you already own a tractor, skid steer, compact track loader or excavator, you may already own the most expensive part of a very effective vegetation-management system.

The right machine depends on what you're trying to clear.

FireSmart Starts With Managing Fuel

Wildfire needs fuel.

On an unmanaged rural property, that fuel can take many forms: tall dry grass, deadfall, pine needles, brush, small trees, low-hanging branches and thick understory vegetation.

FireSmart doesn't mean removing every tree from your property.

The objective is to reduce the quantity and continuity of combustible vegetation, particularly around structures, so that a wildfire has less fuel available as it approaches.

BC Wildfire Service notes that removing surface fuels, thinning vegetation and creating separation between trees and combustible vegetation can help reduce wildfire intensity and slow its spread.

This is where mechanical vegetation management becomes extremely useful.

Instead of spending weeks with a chainsaw, string trimmer and pile of branches, the right mower or mulcher can turn acres of overgrown vegetation into manageable material.

But not every property needs a $50,000 forestry mulcher.

The trick is matching the tool to the job.

Small Property? Start With OREC

If you're maintaining a residential acreage, orchard, vineyard, trail system or areas where a tractor simply can't fit, OREC brush mowers are an excellent place to start.

These aren't conventional lawn mowers.

They're designed for vegetation that has already gotten beyond the capabilities of an ordinary mower.

OREC Brush Rover: Sit Down and Attack the Brush

For larger open areas, the OREC Brush Rover is one of the most enjoyable ways to tackle overgrown property.

Think of it as the machine sitting between a conventional riding mower and a tractor-mounted brush cutter.

The Brush Rover is a purpose-built ride-on brush mower designed for tall grass, weeds, woody vegetation and rough terrain. OREC currently offers 2WD and 4WD versions, with the Brush Rover using a roughly 38-inch cutting width and heavy-duty cutting system intended specifically for brush rather than manicured lawn.

For someone with several acres of grass and brush to maintain but who doesn't necessarily need or own a tractor, it's a very attractive solution.

You can get into tighter spaces than you could with a tractor and rotary cutter while covering considerably more ground than you would with a walk-behind machine.

OREC Cyclone: A Walk-Behind Flail Mower for the Ugly Stuff

Then there is the OREC Cyclone.

This is where you go when the property has become too rough for a normal mower.

The Cyclone is a true walk-behind flail mower that uses multiple hinged flail knives to attack tall grass, weeds, brambles and small saplings while breaking the material down as it cuts.

OREC offers both wheeled and tracked Cyclone models. The tracked AHRC663 uses a 25.6-inch cutting width and 38 flail blades, and it can be equipped with an optional sulky platform if you'd rather ride behind it than walk.

The tracked machine is particularly interesting for slopes, uneven terrain and locations where traction matters.

For trails, steep residential properties, orchards or brush around areas inaccessible to larger equipment, a machine like the Cyclone can be incredibly useful.

OREC Winged Badger: Stand-On Flail-Blade Mowing

For properties that are more maintained but still rougher than a conventional lawn, OREC also offers the Winged Badger stand-on mower.

It uses a flail-style cutting system, a stand-on operator platform and a 42-inch cutting width, while its folding deck arrangement allows the machine to pass through a roughly 36-inch opening.

This isn't the machine we'd choose to reclaim a forest.

It's the machine we'd look at for maintaining cleared areas so that they don't turn back into heavy vegetation in the first place.

And that distinction is important.

The cheapest vegetation to clear is the vegetation you never allow to become completely overgrown.

Already Own a Tractor? You Have Plenty of Options

For many acreage and farm owners, the tractor sitting in the shed is already an excellent FireSmart property-maintenance machine.

You simply need to decide how aggressive you need to get.

MK Martin Rotary Cutters: Straightforward Brush Control

For maintaining fields, trails, fence lines and open acreage, it's difficult to beat a traditional 3-point rotary cutter.

MK Martin offers tractor-mounted rotary cutters in a variety of sizes and duty levels, including conventional PTO rotary cutters for smaller tractors and heavier machines for larger tractors and tougher applications. Current models cover cutting widths from roughly 48 inches upward, with different series intended for tractors from compact machines through substantially larger agricultural tractors.

If the job is mostly:

Tall grass.

Blackberries.

Weeds.

Light brush.

Pasture regrowth.

Young woody vegetation.

A rotary cutter may be all you need.

You don't always need to turn vegetation into sawdust.

Sometimes you simply need to mow it.

And if you mow it regularly, you can prevent relatively easy vegetation-management work from eventually becoming expensive land-clearing work.

Braber Flail Mowers: A Different Approach

A flail mower is another excellent choice for tractor owners.

Rather than using one or two large rotary blades, a flail mower uses numerous smaller swinging knives or hammers mounted across a rotating drum.

That gives the machine a different cutting characteristic.

Flail mowers are very good at chopping vegetation into smaller pieces and can leave a more evenly processed finish than a traditional rotary cutter.

Braber Equipment offers 3-point PTO flail mowers for tractors in a range of sizes and horsepower requirements.

For regular property maintenance, trails, orchards and areas where you want brush and grass chopped relatively finely, they're an excellent option.

Braber Offset Boom Flail Mowers: Reach Where a Normal Mower Can't

Then things get more interesting.

A standard mower has to stay directly behind your tractor.

An offset boom mower doesn't.

Braber's offset boom mowers hydraulically move the flail head to the side of the tractor and allow it to tilt.

That means you can mow:

Ditch banks.

Road edges.

Fence lines.

Slopes.

Pond edges.

Hedges.

Areas beneath or beside trees.

The Braber AGL series, for example, includes models designed for roughly 20-50 HP tractors depending on size, with hydraulic offset and tilt allowing the mower head to work beyond the tractor's wheel track.

For rural properties with kilometres of roadsides or fence lines, this can make an enormous difference.

Instead of driving your tractor into the ditch, you keep the tractor where it's stable and move the mower to the vegetation.

Have a Skid Steer? Now We Can Get Aggressive

Once we move into skid steers and compact track loaders, the possibilities expand substantially.

A high-flow compact track loader can operate equipment capable of clearing vegetation that would overwhelm a normal rotary cutter.

For grass, heavy weeds and moderate brush, MK Martin offers conventional hydraulic rotary cutters for skid steers, including models capable of cutting brush up to roughly 2 inches in diameter.

They're simple, productive and relatively easy to operate.

For reclaiming an old field, cutting trail systems, controlling dense brush or maintaining acreage, a skid-steer rotary cutter is often the most cost-effective attachment.

But what happens when 2-inch material isn't the problem anymore?

That's where the MK Martin Extreme Duty Brush Cutter comes in.

MK Martin Extreme Duty Brush Cutter: When a Normal Brush Cutter Isn't Enough

The MK Martin BCH78XD Extreme Duty Brush Cutter is not just a heavier version of a conventional rotary cutter.

It's built for serious land clearing.

The 78-inch machine uses a massive rotor and four pivoting blades, requires approximately 20 GPM or more of hydraulic flow and is rated by MK Martin for woody material up to 10 inches in diameter.

That's an enormous jump in capability from a normal skid-steer mower.

For contractors, large acreage owners and customers who need to selectively remove saplings and trees without stepping all the way up to a forestry mulcher, it's an interesting middle ground.

A conventional rotary cutter maintains land.

An Extreme Duty cutter can start reclaiming it.

Forestry Mulchers: When You Want the Brush Gone

Eventually, vegetation becomes too dense and too woody for mowing to be the right answer.

That's where forestry mulchers come in.

Instead of simply knocking vegetation over, a forestry mulcher uses a high-speed rotor with cutting teeth to process brush and woody material into mulch.

You aren't left with rows of whole saplings lying across the property.

The machine processes much of that vegetation where it stands.

Baumalight: A Great Entry Into Forestry Mulching

For acreage owners, farms and contractors getting into vegetation-management work, Baumalight is often where we'd start the conversation.

Baumalight builds brush mulchers for skid steers, mini skid steers, excavators and tractors, with a wide range of sizes and carrier requirements.

We generally position Baumalight as our residential, agricultural and entry-level commercial forestry mulcher line.

That's not to say Baumalight doesn't make heavy equipment — they absolutely do.

The lineup extends all the way into large skid-steer and excavator mulchers.

But Baumalight offers particularly useful options at the smaller end of the market, where an acreage owner or contractor may want to put a mulching head on equipment they already own rather than buying a dedicated land-clearing machine.

For example, Baumalight's 500 Series skid-steer mulchers are specifically aimed at applications including farm fence-line maintenance and entry-level contractor work.

An excavator mulcher can be especially attractive when the terrain itself makes driving a skid steer into the vegetation difficult.

FAE: Premium Commercial Forestry Mulching

For customers who make their living clearing land, FAE is where we'd look next.

FAE is one of the best-known specialized manufacturers in professional land clearing, with a forestry-mulcher range covering tractors, skid steers, excavators and dedicated carriers.

We position FAE as our premium commercial forestry mulching line.

The lineup is enormous.

FAE currently offers skid-steer mulchers for machines from roughly 45 to 135 HP, with models ranging from lighter vegetation-management heads through units capable of processing substantially larger woody material.

For excavators, FAE goes even further.

Its excavator-mulcher lineup covers carriers from approximately 2 tonnes all the way to 40 tonnes, with heads designed for everything from light vegetation to major commercial land-clearing work.

That means we can potentially put an FAE head on a compact excavator for trail and property-maintenance work, or move all the way into a major production mulcher for professional contractors.

FAE's larger forestry heads are capable of processing trees, brush, stumps and roots, with some models rated for material well beyond what conventional cutters can handle.

If you're clearing land every day and uptime, productivity and production rate directly determine how much money you make, this is where spending more on the attachment can make sense.

Baumalight gets you into forestry mulching.

FAE takes you into serious commercial forestry mulching.

Both have a place.

Rotary Cutter or Forestry Mulcher?

This is probably the most important buying decision.

If you're mostly cutting grass and occasional brush, buy a rotary cutter.

If you're dealing with tall grass, weeds and brush and want material processed more finely, consider a flail mower.

If you've got heavy brush and occasional larger saplings, an extreme-duty brush cutter may be the sweet spot.

If you're working through dense woody vegetation, trees and serious land reclamation, you're into forestry-mulcher territory.

Buying more attachment than you need costs money.

Buying less attachment than you need wastes time and often ends with broken equipment.

The Carrier Matters Just as Much as the Attachment

One of the most common mistakes people make when buying a forestry attachment is choosing the cutter first and worrying about the machine afterward.

It needs to happen the other way around.

For a tractor, we need to know your PTO horsepower, tractor weight, three-point hitch category and hydraulic capabilities.

For a skid steer or compact track loader, we need machine weight, hydraulic flow, hydraulic pressure, standard-flow or high-flow configuration and coupler setup.

For an excavator, we need the operating weight, auxiliary hydraulic flow and pressure, coupler or pin dimensions and intended application.

Two skid steers that look almost identical can perform dramatically differently with the same mulcher.

Matching the attachment correctly is what makes the combination work.

Clear It Once. Then Maintain It.

There are really two stages to FireSmart vegetation management.

The first is reclamation.

That's the difficult part.

Maybe the property hasn't been touched for 15 years. There are saplings everywhere, brush is chest high and the grass disappeared underneath it years ago.

That's when you may need the excavator mulcher, skid-steer forestry head or Extreme Duty brush cutter.

But after you've reclaimed the ground, don't let it get back to that point.

That's when a rotary cutter, flail mower or OREC Brush Rover takes over.

Regular maintenance is faster, easier and less expensive than reclaiming the same property every decade.

And from a wildfire perspective, maintaining that vegetation is exactly the point.

FireSmart BC recommends making vegetation management part of regular property maintenance rather than treating it as a one-time project.

One Important Warning: Don't Start a Fire While Trying to Prevent One

There is an obvious irony here.

The same machinery used to reduce wildfire fuel can create ignition hazards if it's operated carelessly during hot, dry conditions.

In British Columbia, activities including mechanical brushing, mechanical land clearing and grass mowing can fall within regulated high-risk activities in industrial or commercial settings.

Check current wildfire conditions and restrictions before working.

Be particularly cautious with machinery around rocks and extremely dry vegetation, maintain equipment properly and keep appropriate fire-suppression equipment available.

BC's fire-danger system specifically warns that at High fire danger, fuels are very dry and fires can start easily and burn vigorously.

FireSmart work is best done before the hottest and driest part of summer whenever possible.
